The Australian Home Heating Association (AHHA) is pleased to share the latest development in wood heater legislation in the ACT. On June 26, the Environment Protection Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 was passed, marking a significant recognition of the advancements in wood heater technology. Presented by Rebecca Vassarotti, ACT Minister for the Environment, Parks and Land Management, this amendment acknowledges that older wood heaters contribute more to air pollution compared to their modern counterparts.
This legislation focuses on preventing the installation of old non-compliant wood heaters, including those that are gifted or relocated. By doing so, the ACT government aims to phase out the older, polluting models while allowing the continued installation of new low emission wood heaters. Homeowners can take comfort in knowing that they can still purchase and install new, modern wood heaters in their homes. This means that the community can continue to enjoy the benefits of wood heating, using advanced technology that is both efficient and environmentally friendly.
Importantly, the new legislation does not require the removal of existing wood heaters. Homeowners can keep their current units while having the option to upgrade to cleaner, more efficient models in the future. This ensures a smooth transition towards better air quality without disrupting the comfort and heating preferences of Canberrans.
The AHHA sees this amendment as a positive step forward. While we do not support the ACT government’s long-term plan to phase out wood heaters entirely by 2045, we acknowledge the immediate benefits of this legislative change. It strikes a balance by addressing air quality concerns while still allowing homeowners to take advantage of the cost-effective, clean-burning and cosy warmth that modern wood heaters provide.
